Right now I live in California, and while it is my work that has brought me here (I'm in the Navy), I can't complain about the weather. Now this spring we have shifted hours to start even earlier than normal (around 6 am) but we can usually wrap up around 2:30. This has inspired a few of us to try Golf After Work; before we could leave work so early we would have to quietly try to wrap up and rush over to the course to play a round, but after tonight I've discovered we can easily squeeze 9 holes in (walking) after work, and with time to spare! Being in a line of work with so much demand on our time my golfing group is pretty committed to squeezing some amateur golf in late in the evenings. I'm sure we aren't the only ones to ever get asked to finish up as the sun was setting but it seems to happen to us a lot. Today my loyal twosome partner started even later than I did, teeing off at the 1st hole at around 3:30 and joining me where its green and the 6th hole's tee box meet. We were excited to realize we still had some residual sunlight left by the time we were done, so we can get in many more weekday rounds of Golf After Work before the days lengthen up in the summer.
Here's a photo of the course (I didn't take it, I 'stole' it from this blog written by a travelling retired couple). It's called Admiral Baker's Golf Course, and there are actually two 18 hole courses, the North and South, both beginning outside the same club house which makes for two great options for the same price. They both feature great southern California plant life and a backdrop of some small mountains surrounding the little valley right outside San Diego. The North course is considered more fun, beautiful, and difficult, though the South course is nothing to scoff at for the price (usually around $1 per hole walking).
Anyone have other great courses they have played for cheap that aren't well known? Or have a great story about amateur or more sophisticated golf? Join the conversation!
